Interventional pain management is a practice that has the goal of alleviating pain. Physicians who practice interventional pain management look beyond medications when treating their patients. Instead, they combine a variety of different therapies to ensure that the pain is reduced.
- Physical therapy is often recommended as a way to not only reduce pain, but to increase range of motion and restore mobility. Stretching, exercises, and massage may be incorporated into the treatment plan.
- Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic procedure used to assess the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them. EMG can reveal nerve damage, dysfunction, muscle dysfunction or problems with signal transmission from nerve to muscle. EMG may be ordered to indicate a disorder, disease, or issue so doctors can best treat the source of pain.
- Injections and infusions can also provide relief from pain. These methods involve injecting a variety of pharmaceuticals and fluids including numbing agents, pain relieving drugs, and steroids, into the area of the body emitting pain.
- Stimulation is an effective way to relieve pain in the back, neck, and other parts of the body. Electrodes are placed close to the injured area and emit gentle currents to the muscles, which block the brain’s ability to process pain.
