As we get older, our lean muscle mass decreases. This age related process is known as sarcopenia.
While there are many factors that can contribute to sarcopenia, the main question most people ask is how to deal with it or counteract the process. Luckily, it’s not inevitable and there are things you can do. Here are some tips for fighting sarcopenia.
Strength Training: There is research available that seems to indicate that regular exercise 4-5 can deter declines in muscle mass and strength with age. Establishing a regiment that is approved by your doctor can be a key factor in maintaining your strength.
Diet: A healthy diet with an adequate amount of protein (25-30 grams) with each meal is essential for protein synthesis as we grow older. This is especially important for certain building blocks of proteins like amino acids. Some amino acids are essential, which means the body can’t synthesize them, so they must be ingested through the diet.
So if you’re willing to put the work in with diet and exercise, it can greatly limit the effects of sarcopenia.
