Is there such a thing as using heat too much for pain relief? The short answer is, yes.
Prolonged exposure to heat can cause a skin condition known as Erythema ab igneous (EAI). Also known as water bottle rash or net rash, this condition is caused by chronic prolonged exposure to heat such as water bottles or other heating sources for pain control. This can lead to a rash-like discoloration of the skin, usually hyper-pigmentation, and can get worse over time with continued exposure after the appearance of the rash. The “rash” in of itself is benign, however it can be predisposed to developing skin cancers if one doesn’t refrain from chronic heat. If you see this happening, it usually resolves over time once the chronic heat is removed. But, it is advisable to have a doctor examine that area and monitor it over time to make sure you don’t develop anything.
